The Wise Judge

Two women were brought before the king. Both these women had a quarrel over a single baby. Each woman was saying that she was the baby’s mother.

One lady said, “Oh king! I am the baby’s mother”.

The other lady said, “Oh King! Do not believe her, She is not the mother. I am the mother of the child.”

The King was confused. After a deep thought he said, “Cut the baby into two and give one part to each mother”. One woman was silent. The other cried “Oh King! Let she have the baby. Let the baby live”. The King gave the child to the crying mother.

Foolish Monkeys

Before several centuries, there was a very large, dense and dark forest. A group of monkeys arrived at the forest. It was winter season and the monkeys struggled hard to survive the freezing cold nights. They were hunting for fire to get warm.

One night, they saw a firefly and considered it a dab of fire. All the monkey in the group shouted ‘fire, fire, fire yeah we got fire’.

A couple of monkeys tried to catch the firefly and it escaped. They were sad as they could not catch the fire. They were talking to themselves that they couldn’t live in the cold if they didn’t get the fire.

The next night, again they saw many fireflies. After several attempts, the monkeys caught a few fireflies. They put the fireflies in a hole dug in the land and tried to blow the flies.
The blew the flies very hard without knowing the fact that they were flies. An owl was watching the activities of the monkeys. The owl reached the monkey and told them, “Hey old owl you don’t know anything about how to make fire. Don’t disturb us.”

The Owl warned the monkeys again and asked them to stop their foolish act. “Monkeys, you cannot make fire from the flies, please hear my words.”

The monkey tried to make fire from the flies. The Owl told them to stop acting foolish. “ You are struggling so much, go take your shelter in a nearby cave. You can save yourself from the freezing cold.” The monkeys shouted at the Owl and it left. The monkeys were so foolish and repeating the same activity upto mid night. They got very tired and realized that the words of Owl were correct and they were trying to blow a fly and not a fire.

They then sheltered themselves at the cave and escaped from the cold.

We may go wrong many times and should seek and accept the advice or suggestions given by others.

A Glass of Milk

There was a poor boy, who made a living with selling various objects door to door, to pay for his school. He was very hungry and felt he couldn’t walk even a few steps. He decided to ask for food at a house.

He knocked the door and was stunned to see a beautiful young girl at the door step. With so much hesitation, in spite of his hunger he asked the girl to offer a glass of water.

The young girl understood his hunger through his eyes and offered him milk in huge glass. With astonished look he drank the milk very slowly. And asked how much I owe you for this milk?

The girl replied “I don’t accept anything for kindness.” With big smile in his face, the boy thanked the girl from the bottom of his heart and left the place.

Years passed by. The young girl fell ill and was diagnosed with the rarest kind of nervous condition, which was a complicated condition to treat. While many experience doctors baffled at her condition, she was taken to a big hospital to study about her condition.

Dr. Madhav, a renowned specialist was called in by the hospital to examine her. He gave a visit to the hospital where she was admitted to learn about the rare condition.

As he entered her room, Dr. Madhav, immediately identified who that woman was. With all his efforts and knowledge, Dr. Madhav battled hardly with the disease for weeks and months. At last, he won over the disease and the woman was completely cured. Every one praised the doctor, while the woman was quite afraid about the hospital bill as she could not afford to pay.

Dr. Madhav asked the hospital to send the bill to him as he would add his charged. After receiving the hospital bill, he wrote a note and sent it to her. With lots of fear, she opened the bill and had no idea how much she was charged.

Her eyes filled with tears and happiness once she opened the bill. She found the bill cancelled and that was not the reason for her happiness. The little note beneath it was “ I don’t accept anything for kindness”.

The Foolish Donkey

A salt seller used to carry the salt bag on his donkey to the market every day. On the way they had to cross a stream. One day the donkey suddenly tumbled down the stream and salt bag also fell into the water. The salt dissolved in the water and hence the bag became very light to carry. The donkey was happy.

Then the donkey started to play the same trick every day. The salt seller came to understand the trick and decided to teach a lesson to it. The next day he loaded a cotton bag on the donkey. Again it played the same trick hoping that the cotton bag would be still lighter.

But the dampened cotton became very heavy to carry and it suffered much. It learnt a lesson. Afterwards it did not play the trick and the seller was happy.

The Farmer And His Sons

The Farmer And His Sons

The Farmer And His Sons
A farmer had five sons. They were strong and hardworking.

But they always quarreled with one another. Sometimes, they even fought. The farmer wanted his sons to stop quarreling and fighting. He wanted them to live in peace.

Plain words of advice or scolding did not have much effect on these young people.

The farmer always thought what to do to keep his sons united. One day he found an answer to the problem. So he called all his sons together. He showed them a bundle of sticks and said, “I want any of you to break these sticks without separating them from the bundle.”

Each of the five sons tried one by one. They used their full strength and skill. But non of them could break the sticks. Then the old man separated the sticks and gave each of them just a single stick to break. They broke the sticks easily.

The farmer said, “ A single stick by itself is weak. It is strong as long as it is tied up in a bundle. Likewise, you will be strong if you are united. You will be weak if you are divided.”

Mullah Nazruddin Stories – Mullah Gets a Cow

One day, Mullah’s wife told him, “Let’s buy a cow so that we can have milk every day.”

Mullah replied, “ We don’t have enough space in our yard for my donkey and a new cow”.

But despite Mullah’s objection, his wife persisted until he finally gave in.

So he bought the cow – and just as he predicted, it crowded his beloved donkey in the barn.
This prompted Mullah to start praying one night, saying, “Dear God, please kill the cow, so my wife can’t bother me about it anymore and so my donkey can live in peace.”

The next day, Mullah went into the barn and was dismayed to discover that his donkey was dead. He looked up and said, “God, I don’t mean to offend you or anything, but let me ask you this -  after all these years, do you mean to tell me that you still can’t tell the difference between a cow and a donkey.

Mullah, knowing his son was looking for a wife, asked him what type of wife he wanted.
“one who is intelligent and expressive” the latter replied.

“OK”, replied Mullah. “I’ll help you find such a woman”.

So as part of his plan, Mullah led his son to the town square. He then slapped his son in front of all the people and exclaimed. “This is what you get for doing exactly what I told you to do!”

One young lady saw this and remarked, “Stop hitting him. How can you punish him for obeying what you said?”

When the son heard this, he turned to his father and said, “She seems like the right woman for me -  don’t you think so?”

“well,” replied Mullah, “She is certainly expressive and intelligent, but perhaps there are woman out there who is even better fit for you.”

So Mullah led his son to the neighbouring area’s town square and repeated the same scene. This time, a young lady saw this and said, “Go ahead and hit him. Only a fool would follow orders so blindly.”

When Mullah heard this, he said to his son, “The first woman was intelligent and expressive – but this woman is on an entirely higher level altogether. I think we have found your future wife.
